Outback Vehicle Prep
If you're planning on a long distance road trip into the Outback, then you'll need to ensure you get a full car service and pack your trunk with a number of key supplies. The Outback is potentially dangerous country, and the possibility of a breakdown is undoubtedly higher than if you were driving through urban terrain.
Taking your car to a garage will help you to ensure that it's in top condition to make the journey, but also they'll be able to advise you on a few simple items you'll want to be taking with you. Check your tyres, as they will be carrying you all of the way. Make sure the tread depth is adequate and that they are securely fastened and well pumped up, and the rest will be sorted with a good engine and car service. This guide will help you prepare your car to make this journey, so that you can enjoy the sights and sounds worry free.
Check Your Tyres
It never hurts to have a few handy tools in your trunk. A spare tyre is a must, as is a foot pump, a 20 cents coin and a car jack. You never know when you'll need to jack up the car to change a tyre, especially when travelling over rough terrain. In fact, a couple of spare tyres would help, especially if you have the room and are driving something like a pickup.
To check that all of your tyres have enough tread, you can then take the 20 cents coin and stick it into the groove. If the groove reaches the platypus's bill then you know you're within the legal limit. A foot pump is always handy, however you can couple this with a single charge electric pump and battery jump starter kit.
Pack a Fire Resistant Blanket
Bush fires are always gonna be a hazard, especially in the summer. Make sure you speak with your local fire department and purchase a fire resistant blanket that can be used should you get caught in the trail of a blaze. If you are caught in a blaze, the tyres on your car may melt, but at least you'll be free to leave the vehicle unharmed and await rescue.
Pack Extra Food and Water
Food for you and food for your car. Both of these will be invaluable when travelling long distances. Assuming you have the space, try to take extra fuel for the car along with water to top up the engine and windscreen wipers. This will help avoid overheating of the engines and will ensure your windows are clear of dirty and dust, dramatically reducing your chances of a crash.
